Title

New Minister Assigned to Rossville United Methodist Church

Description

How do you introduce the new minister of the Rossville United Methodist Church? Is it Reverend Ackman, or would you say Miss Ackman? Still, Deborah K. Ackman may be better, or maybe some say “Deb” for short.
How do you describe her? You could say young, pretty, intelligent, talented, or energetic . . . and you would be right. On meeting Reverend Ackman, you get the feeling immediately that it really doesn’t matter much what you call her, or how you describe her - she’s just plain Deborah ... a girl you’ve known all your life.
Deborah calls Iowa her hometown, explaining that her father was a minister there and she never really had a chance to stay in one town very long. In 1965, her father was assigned to the Kansas East Conference and she was graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School shortly after his assignment. Her college education included Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Ia., and the Chicago Theological Seminary from which she graduated in 1975.
Reverend Ackman’s work experience includes the Summer Clinical Pastoral Program at Osawatomie State Hospital, her first charge at New Mission United Methodist Church in LaCygne, Ks., and the Valley View United Methodist Church in Overland Park.
Deborah’s interests include music and guitar singing, photography, writing and, “Oh, yes, don’t forget my two guinea pigs,” she added. Deborah was a little sad, however, because her two guinea pigs are both female. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone had a male I could borrow for awhile,” she added.
Reverend Ackman indicated she was going to concentrate on visitations and get to know everyone…”Get the whole lay of the land,” she said. “I tend to develop programs from specific needs of the people,” she answered in response to what new things she hope to do in the church.
When asked if she thought the congregation would accept a lady minister she replied, “I feel absolutely at home.” A simple answer that needs no explanation once you’ve met the Reverend Deborah K. Ackman.
