He was a horse-trader and livery stable operator at Delia and Emmett before becoming a heavyweight boxer. Many of Rossville, Kansas, area people followed the career of Jess Willard. A group of local enthusiasts went to Havana, Cuba, in 1915 to watch his fight with Jack Johnson. Willard knocked him out in the 26th round to win the championship on April 5 when the temperature was 115. Pictured standing behind Jess Willard are his first two trainers on the left, Bob Willard (Jess's brother), and Fred Stalker (Jess's and Bob's step-brother) on the right. Jess died December 15, 1968, and is buried in Los Angeles, California. Title A name given to the resource Dr. Clyde S. Smith, Rossville, Kansas Description An account of the resource Dr. Clyde S. Smith was born November 8, 1881, in Edina, Missouri. He practiced medicine in Willard, Kansas, around 1905 to 1922, when he moved to Rossville, Kansas. He married Rose Humphrey in February 1906. He owned one of the first automobiles in Rossville, a K-R-I-T, in 1912. He practiced medicine in Rossville until 1959, retiring only three months before he died in June of 1959. His medical office was at the southwest corner of Main Street and Pottawatomie.
