This was the result of a treaty of 1816 which granted the Pottawatomie's a portion of the old Kansas reservation. Later, a portion of this tract was destined to become the townsite of Silver Lake, KS . It is generally believed that Silver Lake derived its name from the clear and silvery waters of the lake.
