Transcription of Note on Photograph: U.S. Senator from Kansas in 1865. He cast [the] deciding vote, which saved Andrew Johnson from impeachment. At first opportunity, was defeated for re-election and virtually driven from [the] Republican party and from Kansas. He came to Coffeyville and started Ross' Paper, a weekly, first paper printed in the town. Later he went to New Mexico Territory. He died a poor farmer near Albuquerque.
